The Food and Drug Administration filed a final rule October 9, scheduled to be published October 13, that permits salt substitutes in 139 federal food standards, among them cheddar, bread, canned corn, margarine and mayonnaise. Using one is optional. FDA adds no label requirement and points shoppers who watch potassium to the ingredient list and Nutrition Facts label. The Register's record gives an effective date of December 14; objections to the dairy standards are due November 12.
