OpenAI and Anthropic both released new models at lower prices on Tuesday, September 22, GPT-6 Sol at $2/$10 and Claude Opus 5.5 at $4/$20 per million input/output tokens, and within three days OpenAI had fixed a bug that degraded image understanding in GPT-6 Sol and Luna while Anthropic had resumed billing for some refusals that return nothing.
On September 22 OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna at standard short-context rates of $2/$10 and $0.10/$0.50 per million input/output tokens, a cut it measures against GPT-5.6 'promotional pricing', and Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 at $4/$20, 20% below Opus 5, with higher five-hour limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans and a rate-limit reset subscribers can save. Anthropic says most cybersecurity tasks on Opus 5.5 are re-routed to Opus 4.8. On September 24 Anthropic resumed billing, at full model rates, for refusals that arrive before any output in its bio, frontier_llm and reasoning_extraction categories; the fallback models Anthropic names for flagged Opus 5.5 requests, Opus 5 and Opus 4.8, are priced at $5/$25. On September 25 OpenAI fixed a bug in image encoding that degraded image understanding in both new models and recommended that developers whose use cases involve image inputs rerun their evaluations. OpenAI does not say when the bug began or how large the effect was. Anthropic publishes no false-positive figures for the billed refusal categories. OpenAI lists GPT-5.6 Sol's promotional price as available at least through November 21, 2026.
