A GAO report dated September 18 and made public September 29 says the Labor Department's Wage and Hour Division cited 44,857 child labor violations from fiscal 2015 through 2025, including 6,860 in fiscal 2025, which affected 5,268 children. Division officials told GAO the figures should not be used to describe how common illegal child labor is. GAO makes five recommendations to the department, which generally disagreed with one. They are addressed to the department, not to families or employers.
