Medicare's annual enrollment period starts today, and this is the first time in a while that I have felt this good about the tools behind the work.

This week at SilverPath, we were able to pull more than 350,000 doctor records and millions of plan connections for our quoting tool. There has been a lot of work behind that sentence. Seeing the data come together feels amazing.

I work on SilverPath, so I have a stake in it. This is my account of what we are building and how it is changing my day.

More room for the conversation

Most of my day-to-day work has been automated now, apart from talking to clients. That is a big change in how the day feels.

I want to sit down with someone, hear what they need, and have the information ready to work through the choices with them. Every routine task the tools can handle gives me more room to do that well.

The conversation still belongs to people. A client can tell me what matters to them, what they are worried about, and what they need to understand before making a decision. I want my attention available for those answers.

That is the part of this week's progress I am most excited about. The volume of data matters because of the work it can help us do when someone needs an answer.

What those numbers mean

Those are the counts I am reporting from this week's work. They have not been independently audited for this journal, and pulling a record into a data pipeline is different from confirming a doctor's participation at a particular office for a particular plan and year.

Millions of connections are useful material for a quoting tool. They are not a promise that every connection is current or that a person's doctor takes every plan shown. The exact plan, office and coverage year still need confirmation.

I want the tool to make those checks easier. I also want it to be honest about what remains to be checked.

Getting started

Medicare's official annual window runs October 15 through December 7. Medicare says coverage starts January 1 when the plan receives the enrollment request by December 7.
