The Justice Department says Alvaro Pulido Vargas is in the Southern District of Florida to face charges in two money-laundering cases. Its October 11 release schedules an initial appearance for the afternoon of October 13.
The announcement concerns indictments returned in 2019 and 2021. It does not announce a conviction, and the scheduled appearance is not reported here as a completed hearing.
Two separate cases
DOJ describes the 2021 case as an alleged bribery scheme involving approximately $1.6 billion in Venezuelan government food and medicine contracts. According to its account of the indictment, defendants obtained contracts through the government-controlled CLAP program, inflated costs and laundered proceeds through accounts in several countries.
The department says approximately $180 million was allegedly transferred through or to the United States. That figure describes a narrower movement of money within the alleged scheme; it is not an additional $180 million to add to the contract amount.
The 2019 case concerns an alleged housing-contract and currency-exchange scheme with Alex Nain Saab Moran. DOJ describes approximately $350 million allegedly moved from Venezuela through the United States to overseas accounts. It says the scheme used false import documents and bribes to obtain approvals.
What the release establishes
The source announces custody and the planned appearance. Its descriptions of the schemes remain allegations. DOJ says an indictment is an allegation and defendants are presumed innocent unless proved guilty.
The release's opening refers to alleged laundering of more than $2 billion. Its later sections describe different amounts and financial categories. This report preserves those descriptions without constructing a new total or treating contract values as independently proved losses.
The next procedural record
The current docket and any appearance minutes would establish what happened in court on October 13. Those records, along with the linked indictments, were not independently read for this report.
The October 11 release date, older indictment dates and October 13 scheduled court event describe separate stages.
