OpenAI's API deprecations page carries two sections dated October 1, 2026, each setting a future shutdown date for a group of models. Both sit at the top of "Upcoming deprecations," which the page says is sorted "with the most recent announcements at the top."
The two sections
The first, headed "2026-10-01: GPT-5.3-Codex, GPT-5.1, GPT-5.4-Nano," reads:
The following models are deprecated and will be removed from the API on April 1, 2027, with six months’ notice. Migrate to the recommended replacements before the shutdown date.
Its table lists three model ids, all with a shutdown date of Apr 1, 2027, under a column headed "Recommended replacement": gpt-5.3-codex is paired with gpt-6-sol, gpt-5.4-nano with gpt-6-luna, and gpt-5.1 with gpt-6-sol.
The second, headed "2026-10-01: Text-to-speech models," reads:
The following text-to-speech models are deprecated and will be removed from the API on January 6, 2027, with at least three months’ notice. Migrate to gpt-realtime-2.1-mini before the shutdown date. See the Realtime API guide to plan your migration.
Its table lists four ids, all with a shutdown date of Jan 6, 2027, and all four paired with the same recommended replacement, gpt-realtime-2.1-mini: tts-1, tts-1-hd, gpt-4o-mini-tts-2025-03-20, and gpt-4o-mini-tts-2025-12-15.
Two different notice periods
The page states the two periods differently. The model section says "six months’ notice," a flat figure. The text-to-speech section says "at least three months’ notice," a floor rather than a fixed figure. Both are the page's own characterisation of the gap between each section's October 1 date and the shutdown date it states.
What this means if you use these ids
The page's own instruction, in both sections, is to migrate before the shutdown date. For gpt-5.3-codex, gpt-5.4-nano and gpt-5.1, that date is April 1, 2027. For tts-1, tts-1-hd, gpt-4o-mini-tts-2025-03-20 and gpt-4o-mini-tts-2025-12-15, it is January 6, 2027. Nothing has been removed: both dates are months away, and "deprecated" on this page means announced for future removal, not already unreachable.
What the page does not say
- When either section was published or last edited, or why. The page carries no per-section edit date and no changelog.
- Whether any usage volume, pricing change, or other factor sits behind the two dates.
- Whether a recommended replacement behaves like the model it is listed against. The page names replacements; it does not compare them.
- What a request to any of the seven listed ids returns today. No API call was made.
