Bodum USA is recalling 5.9 million French Press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes because damaged or cracked glass can unexpectedly break during use and cause serious burns. CPSC's October 29 notice directs consumers to stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafe immediately.
Which coffee makers are covered
The recall covers 8-cup and 12-cup Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya models with replaceable glass carafes. The notice does not identify every Bodum coffee maker as recalled.
The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most covered models. It is also engraved on the glass carafes along with product warnings. The notice points to the recall website for additional photographs and model-identifying information.
Covered products were sold from 1974 through October 2026 for about $15 to $65. Listed outlets include Target, Walmart, coffee and home goods stores, Bodum's website, Amazon and other online retailers.
The remedy is a spoon and warning label
Consumers should contact Bodum to receive a plastic Bodum stirring spoon and a warning label. The label reminds users not to use cracked or damaged carafes and not to stir their contents with metal spoons.
The notice says metal utensils can damage the glass, which can lead to breakage during use. It lists the recall remedy as repair; it does not announce a refund or replacement carafe for every recalled coffee maker.
Bodum can be reached at 888-879-8213, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Friday, or through the contact details and recall website in the CPSC notice.
What the incident count establishes
Bodum has identified 70 reports of carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns to consumers, according to CPSC. These are reported incidents, not a count of injuries independently confirmed for this article. The notice does not assign each report to a particular model or sales year.
