FDA posted Sierra Nevada Cheese Company's notice September 29. It covers four raw-milk varieties because investigators have not isolated a lot or production date. The recall itself began September 24; the outbreak figures below are FDA's September 25 update.

Sierra Nevada Cheese Company is recalling its listed Graziers raw-milk cheeses nationwide for possible E. coli O26:H11 contamination. The company says it has not narrowed the problem to a specific lot, date code or production date.

Which cheese

The notice covers Monterey Jack, Jalapeño Jack, Medium Cheddar and Sharp Cheddar, including listed retail and wholesale sizes. Use the recall's product table and photographs to identify products.

What to do

FDA says not to eat, sell or serve recalled cheese. Return it for a refund or discard it. Check refrigerators and freezers; discard unpackaged cheese if you cannot determine whether it is covered. Clean and sanitize surfaces and containers it touched. FDA advises contacting a health-care provider immediately if you ate this recalled cheese and have symptoms.

The dates behind the notice

FDA says the recall began September 24. Its September 25 outbreak update reports 13 illnesses, eight hospitalizations and three cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome, with no deaths. The company notice was dated September 28 and posted by FDA September 29. Posting a notice does not restart the outbreak count.
