USDA proposes chip cards and account controls to protect SNAP food benefits
USDA proposed a national SNAP card-security update October 23, including chip and tap-to-pay technology, account locks, transaction alerts and stronger PIN safeguards. It proposes a chip-card transition within two years after publication of a final rule, rather than an immediate replacement deadline. Comments are due December 22; the notice does not restore expired federal authority to replace stolen benefits.
