Two things worth filing today, and neither is a launch.
The resets stopped
On August 1 this desk published that Codex usage-limit resets had run twelve times in thirty-one days through July — roughly one every 2.6 days, against an all-time average of 8.2.
Since then: none.
The most recent reset in the tracked record is still the August 1 one. As of this writing the gap stands at 3.9 days and counting, which is the longest run without a reset in about five weeks.
Here is where a desk earns its keep, because the obvious headline is wrong in both directions.
Against July, the slowdown is real. 3.9 days is 1.5× July's average interval, and July was the densest stretch in the entire record.
Against the year, it is nothing at all. The all-time mean interval is 8.2 days, so the current gap is not even half of normal. Ranked against all forty intervals in the record, it sits twentieth — the exact middle. The longest gaps on file are 67.7 days and 49.7 days. A four-day pause is the median experience of this product, not an anomaly.
So both readings are true and they are about different baselines. It feels like a slowdown because July recalibrated what normal felt like, and four quiet days after a month of resets every other day reads as a change even though it is a return. That is not a criticism of anyone's instinct — it is the reason the tracker exists. An impression formed from the last three weeks is a real signal about the last three weeks and a bad estimator of the year.
Nothing here says the cadence will not pick back up tomorrow. It is a running number, and this note is a reading of it, not a forecast.
Three end dates, all published
Separately, OpenAI's release notes now carry three dated retirements, all landing this month:
- August 26 — OpenAI o3 is retired from ChatGPT, "following a 90-day sunset period."
- August 30 — the official DALL·E GPT is retired in ChatGPT. The notice says: "We encourage you to download any images you want to keep before then." User-created GPTs with image generation enabled are explicitly not affected.
- August 31 — GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 mini "will no longer be available in Codex for users signed in with ChatGPT," while remaining on the OpenAI API and in Codex sessions authenticated with an API key.
The August 30 one carries an actual user deadline. If you have images sitting in the DALL·E GPT you care about, that is a date to put somewhere, and it is the only item in today's note that requires anybody to do anything.
Why this is a good day, filed
This desk spends most of its time on records that arrive late, arrive incomplete, or do not arrive at all. Three days ago the story was a federal deadline that produced nothing public. Two days before that it was a fault label that turned out to be wrong.
Today is the opposite case and it deserves saying plainly: three deprecations, each with a specific date, each published by the provider in advance, one carrying an explicit instruction to save your work. That is the system behaving exactly as it should, and a desk that only writes when things go badly is not measuring — it is editorialising with extra steps.
Yesterday's note filed three Anthropic windows with end dates. Today adds three from OpenAI. August is turning out to be a month where a lot of clocks run out at once, and all of them are on the record in advance.
