Medicare's annual open enrollment begins October 15, with plan changes due by December 7

Medicare's annual October 15–December 7 window opens today for changes to Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage. Medicare says coverage starts January 1 when the plan receives an enrollment request by December 7. This is a plan-choice window, with separate considerations for drug coverage and Medigap when returning to Original Medicare.

Why it matters
People with Medicare can change Medicare Advantage and drug coverage during the annual window; returning to Original Medicare can raise separate drug-coverage and Medigap questions.
What to watch

FDA publishes notice of four earlier emergency animal-drug authorizations for New World screwworm

FDA's October 15 notice announces four emergency animal-drug authorizations issued between August 7 and September 3, 2026, for specified uses against New World screwworm. The products cover different animals and prevention or treatment uses. The announcement is not a new finding of a U.S. outbreak, and each authorization has conditions that must be read in its own letter.

Why it matters
The authorizations concern different animals and prevention or treatment uses; they are not interchangeable permissions.
What to watch
Issued August 7, August 13, August 27 and September 3, 2026; announced in the October 15 Register. Read each authorization's conditions before relying on its scope.

The limit. The individual authorization letters are omitted graphics in the text capture and were not read. No dosing, withdrawal period or new outbreak is established.

FDA starts a rare-disease framework initiative and schedules an October 28 meeting

FDA announced October 14 that it is beginning work on a rare-disease framework tailored to small patient populations, disease characteristics and the evidence available for a product. An October 28 meeting at its White Oak campus is planned as an early step. The announcement begins a development process; it does not approve a drug or establish a final regulatory framework.

Why it matters
FDA wants an approach tailored to rare diseases, small populations and the evidence available for different products.
What to watch
FDA plans an October 28 meeting at White Oak, followed by additional consultation. The announcement supplies no final framework effective date.

The limit. The linked white paper and registration details were not read. An initiative is not a drug approval or a guarantee of treatment access.

How this record was read

Limits: the linked white paper, individual product evidence, meeting registration and future guidance were not independently read. CFPB announces investigations into whether large banks' account decisions violated consumer law

The CFPB said October 14 that it will investigate whether banks identified in an OCC report, and other banks, violated consumer financial protection laws through account or credit decisions. Its announcement cites notice requirements and other protections. It announces investigations, rather than findings against a named customer account, a penalty or an award of compensation.

Why it matters
CFPB says it will examine whether large banks' account and credit decisions complied with consumer financial protection laws.
What to watch
The announcement points consumers to the complaint process. It states no penalty, repayment program or compensation deadline.

GAO finds gaps in CBP and ICE body-camera planning, guidance and measures of success

A GAO report publicly released October 14 says CBP and ICE need clearer body-camera planning, operational guidance and measures of program results. AEP is here, and I finally have more time for clients

Medicare's annual enrollment period starts today. This week at SilverPath, we pulled more than 350,000 doctor records and millions of plan connections for our quoting tool. Most of my routine work is now automated. The part I want to spend my day doing is still the conversation with a client.

First-person owner account requested October 15, 2026: the SilverPath data milestone and routine-work automation are the owner's observations, not independently audited counts or measured client outcomes. Doctor records and plan connections do not confirm current participation at a specific office, plan and year. Medicare.gov supplies the enrollment dates.
