3M is recalling about 53,634 Scotch thermal laminators, model TL1302Z, because they can overheat and pose a fire hazard, according to an October 15 Consumer Product Safety Commission notice.

CPSC tells consumers to stop using and unplug the recalled machines immediately and contact 3M for a full refund.

Check the model, not the illustration

The recall describes a light gray or white machine with gray accents, a laminating slot approximately 13 inches wide and a carrying handle on the right when viewed from the front.

The identifying model number, TL1302Z, appears on a sticker underneath the laminator and on its packaging. CPSC's page includes actual product photographs. The generated illustration accompanying this report is not an identification guide.

The recalled machines were sold on Amazon.com from June 2024 through September 2026, for between $44 and $56, according to the notice. The recall does not say every Scotch laminator is affected.

Follow the refund procedure

CPSC says consumers must complete 3M's online recall registration, confirm their machine is included and upload a photograph showing the laminator with its unplugged power cord cut.

The notice says a refund check will be mailed after the completed form and confirmation that the cord was cut are received. It also directs consumers to follow local and state electronics-recycling laws when disposing of the machine.

The listed 3M contact is 800-772-4337, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central. The official recall page links to the registration site.

What the incident count means

3M reported 63 incidents of smoking, melting or overheating, including five fires and one report of minor property damage. CPSC says no injuries were reported.

Those are reports described in the recall notice, not an independently measured failure rate or a reason to keep using an affected machine.
