The Justice Department announced a final rule October 30 letting federal firearms licensees voluntarily use the FBI's NICS system to check certain current or prospective employees. Written employee consent is required. DOJ final rule authorizes voluntary firearm-handler background checks with employees' written consent

Federally licensed firearms businesses will be able to use NICS to check eligible current or prospective employees under a final rule scheduled for publication October 27. Checks require informed written consent. A 'Did Not Pass' result is not a ban on all employment, and the rule provides a way to challenge erroneous records.
