DOJ final rule permits optional background checks for certain firearms employees, with written consent and an appeal route
The Justice Department announced a final rule October 30 letting federal firearms licensees voluntarily use the FBI's NICS system to check certain current or prospective employees. Written employee consent is required. A person who receives a 'Did Not Pass' result may request the reason and appeal; the rule takes effect 30 days after Federal Register publication, which the announcement does not date.

DOJ final rule authorizes voluntary firearm-handler background checks with employees' written consent
Federally licensed firearms businesses will be able to use NICS to check eligible current or prospective employees under a final rule scheduled for publication October 27. Checks require informed written consent. A 'Did Not Pass' result is not a ban on all employment, and the rule provides a way to challenge erroneous records.
